Plataran, which means ‘God’s favourite courtyard’, is a homegrown Indonesian hospitality group. I knew Plataran from some of their restaurants in Jakarta that I patronise regularly. They specialise in Indonesian cuisine with an elegant traditional setting, which makes it a favourite place to take my foreigner friends to.

One should not mistakenly think that Plataran Heritage Borobudur is the same as Plataran Borobudur. The latter is Plataran’s signature luxury resort, whereas Plataran Heritage Borobudur is a four-star hotel, and both are located in different places. The Heritage one is the only hotel in Borobudur with integrated facilities and an adjacent Convention Centre. It is strategically located as a base to explore Borobudur and other temples nearby.

Set in a tranquil village atmosphere with paddy fields and lush gardens, the hotel has 75 rooms and suites designed in a colonial architecture style. Each room is decorated with a colonial-inspired interior and a palette of natural tones with a balcony overlooking a beautiful swimming pool or the Menoreh Hills.

Since Plataran always serves good food, you don’t want to miss their sumptuous breakfast. Their Lontong Sayur (rice cake with coconut milk soup, vegetables, tofu, tempeh, prawn) is the best I have had so far!

Every afternoon they serve free coffee and snacks at the Langit Menoreh rooftop bar, and snacks here means a plate full of sweet and savoury dishes! Wait there until the sun goes down behind the Menoreh Hills.

Lastly, have dinner at Stupa Restaurant, which is set under a joglo (Javanese vernacular house). Their grilled Gurame fish and Tahu Telor (crispy tofu omelette with peanut sauce) are some of my recommendations. It’s a mouth-watering culinary journey!
