It’s hard work on your calves, and if you’re anything like me you’ll sweat profusely going up the soft sand dunes, and your heart will race going down. But sandboarding is an iconic activity you have to try once in your life.

For us growing up in Perth, it’s a rite of passage. Getting there by car is only an hour away, and Lancelin is actually a really picturesque seaside town that you may want to stay at a couple of nights – but close enough for a sneaky day trip.

Boards can be rented for cheap at the dunes, or at any surf shop in town, and all you really need besides that is determination, bravado and some cold water to reward yourself with once you’ve exhausted going up and down.

The silky white sand is pretty deceiving – it works against you when you’re trekking up the dunes, but it looks gorgeous.

If you’re a local, we like to wear shorts or bathers to soak up some extra sunshine.

The faster you go down, the more fun (even though the first time can be a bit scary).
